The Wisconsin Pork Association and Wisconsin Livestock Identification Consortium would like to remind pork producers that Jan. 1, 2015 is the deadline for applying premises identification number (PIN) tags to breeding stock animals going to harvest. The pork industry is moving away from backtags to the use of official, USDA-approved ear tags. These eartags must be applied on the farm of origin to individual breeding swine being marketed into harvest channels to link the animal and the sending premise. PIN tags are not required for feeder pigs, growers or market hogs. This new requirement will improve the pork industry’s pre-harvest traceability, national disease surveillance, and enhance our ability to detect and contain diseases more quickly.
More information from the Pork Checkoff at pork.org, 1-800-456-7675, and from Equity Cooperative at equitycoop.com, 1-800-362-3989, can be found by clicking on the logos below. Additionally, Wisconsin Pork Association, 1-800-822-7675, is available with more information regarding this new requirement. As always, WLIC is here to help with any questions regarding Premise Identification. A Premise ID is needed when ordering the USDA-approved PIN tags. Our office can be reached at 888-808-1910 or emailing firstname.lastname@example.org.
Wisconsin pork producers can get their PIN tags from a number of providers who work cooperatively with WLIC on the Identifying WisconsinTM branded tag program. To order PIN tags, please contact one of the distributors below and request the Identifying WisconsinTM PIN tags. Producers must have their 7-digit premises identification number available when calling to order tags. (Note – your Wisconsin Livestock Premises Code, found on your Wisconsin Livestock Premises Registration Card, is a national PIN.)

For 4 years the Wisconsin Livestock Identification Consortium was able to provide free RFID tags to livestock producers, unfortunately this program has come to an end at this time. Since the start of the program over 225,000 tags were provided to farms across Wisconsin. Many producers have found value in using these tags for herd management purposes. If you are interested in AIN RFID tags and want to learn more about how to incorporate on your farm please download the Incorporating RFID on your Farm resource sheet. This resource sheet contains different tips as far as items you need to consider before you start buying any equipment or software. If you have further questions, feel free to call WLIC at 888-808-1910. You can also read about several farms that have incorporated RFID by going to the Information RFID Resources page on this website.
The Wisconsin Livestock Identification Consortium (WLIC) will implement an animal identification and information system following nationally established standards. This will support the protection of animal health by fostering cooperation and understanding.
